88mm Flak

The design of the Flugzeugabwehrkanone or Flak dates back to 1917 and was used at the end of WWI in the Ruhr area for anti-aircraft defense of industrial facilities.

At the end of WWI, the Treaty of Versailles prohibited Germany from developing and possessing anti-aircraft weapons, so this project was abandoned.

During the Nazi rearmament, in 1933 the production of a new 88mm Flak began.

Over the years different models were produced: Flak 18, Flak 36, Flak 37, Flak 41 and Flak 43.

His career in military actions began in the Spanish Civil War where he was used by the German Condor Legion that fought alongside the nationalits.

During WWII it was used extensively on all fronts, initially as anti-aircraft artillery but later also used in anti-tank roles with fearsome results.

It was used both towed on its original gun carriage and in self-propelled mounts on different vehicles.
