HISTORY:

In face of the need for motorized reconnaissance, intelligence, and land navigation behind enemy lines, British Army Major Ralph A. Bagnold created the LRDG (Long Range Desert Group) on July 3, 1940 after Italian declaration of war.

Although the vehicles used by the LRDG throughout the war were varied, it was common for LRDG units (called patrols) be formed by, at least, one 30 cwt Chevrolet 1533X2 4x2 truck, made in Canada, and a Willys Jeep adapted to conditions of the desert. These vehicles provided patrols with great mobility at high speeds, which was essential for carrying out their missions behind the lines in the deserts of Egypt and Libya.

Weapons mounted on the vehicles was varied throughout the conflict, although it was common to mount a Lewis MK I machine gun on a pillar in the truck bed and mount Vickers K machine guns in mounts, single or double, on the hood on the passenger side. both in the truck and in the Jeep.

A significant portion of the crews were from Australia and New Zealand, as their rural and sometimes desert origins were thought to make these crews better prepared for such a hostile environment.

The vignette shows an LRDG patrol driving at high speed along a road in a rural area of North Africa, behind the road, on a path, a camel driver with a train of camels is seen walking in the same direction.
