In 1938 the British War Office issued specifications for a light scout car. The BSA company (Birmingham Small Arms) won the competition with a prototype, that later adopted the name of another of the competitors (Dingo).

Production began in 1939 at the Daimler factory (which belonged to the BSA group), which built a total of 6,626 vehicles during the entire war.

It was a light vehicle powered by a 55 HP 6 cylinder 2500cc rear engine.

Dingo entered combat in France in 1940.
