The M3 was designed as an all-terrain half-track armored personnel carrier that was widely used by all Allied armies during World War II and beyond.

The M3 was an evolution of the M2 halftrack which was built by different companies such as Diamond T, White Motor Company and Autocar. In addition to troop transport, it was used as a platform for weapons, for example anti-tank artillery, anti-aircraft artillery or even mortar. A total of 54,000 of all variants of this half-track were produced during World War II.

The troop carrier version used to mount an M2 Browning 50 (12.7mm) machine gun on a 360º printle mount in the front area, it also used to mount an M1919 machine gun on the side.
