The SdKfz 222 was an evolution of the SdKfz 221, which in turn was a modification of the primitive Kfz 13 of 1933.

The SdKfz 222 was a 4-wheel drive light armored reconnaissance vehicle with a 3.5 l engine that gave it great versatility and agility, making it highly appreciated in all operations theaters.

The SdKfz 222 mounted a 20mm Rheinmetall KwK 30 L/55 autocannon and an MG-34 machine gun in a peculiar rotating cupola fitted with anti-grenade metal mesh.

Between 1,800 and 2,000 vehicles of this class were produced during the war.
