In the 1930s, the Red Army needed a heavy, heavily armored tank with high firepower. As a result of this need, Soviet engineers developed the KV heavy tank which was tested in combat conditions in the Russo-Finnish winter war, where it proved its worth and then went into production; 508 units of the KV-1 model fought against the Wehrmacht in Operation Barbarossa during World War II.

The KV-1 model weighed 45 tons and mounted a 76.2mm anti-tank gun and was so effective that some of these tanks, along with some T-34s, stopped General Heinz Guderian's 2nd Panzer Corps during the Battle of Moscow.

Over time it was displaced from the battlefields by the new T 34 models which proved to be highly effective.
