The M1931 B-4 was an artillery howitzer of a caliber of 8 inches (203 mm) and a firing range of 11 miles (18 km) that was characterized by its self-propelled tracked mounting that allowed it a small ans slow autonomy (for its precise positioning). For large displacements these big guns used to be towed by red army artillery tractors.

Because of its forcefulness, German soldiers called it Stalin's sledgehammer. This forcefulness was acquired in the Russo-Finnish war where it was used to turn Finnish bunkers into a hodgepodge of concrete and iron.

Its production began in 1932 and until 1942 a total of 1011 units were produced.
